We are so proud of the Surette Lab’s MD/PhD student Saad Syed who won one of the 2018 Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships! This an amazing achievement and we couldn’t be more happy for you Saad! There were 5 other winners from the FHS at McMaster this year. You can read all about them here.
Ophélie Quillier is the Surette Lab’s latest student to complete her Master’s degree. Ophélie defended her thesis entitled “Proactive immunity: commensal bacteria interact with the immune system to inhibit Pseudomonas aeruginosa” on July 17 2018. Way to go Ophélie and we wish you the best of luck in all your future endeavours!
Surette lab members had fun participating in the BBS picnic this year. They had a beautiful summer afternoon at Dundas Driving Park with lots of good food, good friends and fierce competition during the Biochem Olympics.
Mike even got to show off his mouth pipetting skills while competing with the other BBS profs during the Olympics! Although we didn’t place during the Olympics, we did tie for 3rd place for the Spirit Award with the Burrow’s Lab. Thanks to all the students and staff who participated in activities throughout the year to help the lab clench 3rd place!
Welcome to our new post-doc Kim Chau, PhD student Paul Naphtali, MSc student Gayatri Nair and undergrad Connor Davis. We are glad to have you on the team. You can learn more about them on our website’s personnel page.
May 28th the Surette Lab team called “Culture for a Cure” participated in Cystic Fibrosis Canada’s (CFC) Walk to Make Cystic Fibrosis History. A big thank you and shout out to Paul, Rachelle, Ryan, Saad, Richa and Pat for their competitive spirit, athletic and scientific abilities as they represented the Surette Lab in the Biochem Olympics at the beginning of June. It was a tough competition this year and sadly we didn’t place in the top 3 but the Surette Lab had a good showing over all tying with the Burrows Lab for 3rd place for the Spirit award. Thanks to all the who participated throughout the year!
